Artistic Career

Suh Seung-Won (b. 1941), who lives and works in Seoul, Korea, has played a pivotal role in Korean art history: he was a key founding member of the first Korean geometric abstract painters’ group, Origin, organized in the 1960s, and the first Korean avant-garde movement, A.G, in the early 1970s. Suh visualized a concept he called Simultaneity and for more than half a century has experimented with the canvas surface as an area where forms and colors, shapes and backgrounds, time and space are manifested equally. While his early works feature geometric patterns with clear boundaries and bold colors, his more recent works are characterized by the blurring of forms and overlapping opaque colors, creating a different atmosphere. Suh has held numerous solo exhibitions in Korea, as well as in Japan, the United States, Germany, Italy, Canada, etc., and has participated in international art events, such as representing Korea at the Biennale des Jeunes Paris and the São Paulo Biennale. Suh’s awards include the Grand Prize of the Korean Contemporary Artist Award, the Grand Prize of the Contemporary Print Award, the Grand Prize of the 1st Young Artist Award, and the Most Excellent Prize of the 5th Korean Art Grand Prize Award, among others. His works are included in the permanent collections of major art institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, the Seoul Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, and the Sapporo Contemporary Art Museum, etc.
